Edie Cheney
Picture
Edie Cheney was pursuing her degree in family therapy when she and Jacinta were introduced to each other by mutual friends. Edie began assisting Jacinta part time at Our Lady of Fatima Social Services. When they made the move to St. Joseph Social Service Center, Edie expanded her counseling services, offering individual and family therapy for more than 30 years.

In addition to her work and leadership at St. Joseph's, Edie served on the board of the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless for many years. Edie’s compassion and love for our community inspires us every day. One of her long time clients shared: “Sister Edie was a very important person in my life. She helped me deal with all the problems I had with my ex-husband, my children and my family. Even when I had a nervous breakdown she never left my side.

Without Sister Edie my life would have been very bad. She saved my life in many ways. When she said sit on the sofa I knew I was in trouble. I can’t forget that she always said “Don’t forget the elephant in the room.” May God Bless her always.”

Annette Calderin, our Licensed Professional Counselor, shared:

I met Edie while looking for a Counseling Internship. I remember her saying: "Annette, I don’t know where the clients will come from but we can try." When it was time for my internship to start she already had a plan. We worked together counseling families and the homeless. She made sure that it worked for me and I was able to move forward with my goals. Edie made me feel welcome, heard and not judged. She was so detailed. She was also strong. If she had something to say, she would make sure you listened.

The counseling experiences she shared with me are my stepping stones. Sister Edie also helped me enrich my spirituality. We had many deep conversations and she helped me grow as an individual. Today, I have plenty of clients. I continue to help so many people because Sister Edie believed in me. Thank you Sister Edie.

We dedicate our services on February 11, 2026 in honor of Edie Cheney! Thank you, Edie!
